Pegasus Robin Mckinley Books

I love Robin McKinley's work, truly. Pegasus, up to the end, had all the promise of being one of her best, in my opinion. She created beautiful, rich characters, and wondrous scenes and images. There were legends and traditions and magic woven throughout, hinting at a huge impact on the story. It builds beautifully to.....nothing! McKinley dropped the ending like a raw egg on a marble floor. Done. Over. Too bad. Sigh, maybe another novel will tell the rest of the story? Some day?

Ok, editing here. I just did some reading online, checked Ms McKinley's website. I owe her an apology. She has lost her husband, and I suspect it's been a very difficult time for her. It appears there are to be three Pegasus books, and I look forward to reading them all. My best wishes to a wonderful author! And, I do indeed recommend the book!

Pegasus Robin Mckinley Books Reviews

I have read many McKinley books (The Blue Crown, etc.) and was pleased with this one. The world consists of humans wandering into the land of the Pegasi, forming an alliance against multiple monsters, and "bonding" between some pegasi and humans. The tale is descriptive of the land and the people, as well as the progression of the heroine with her bound pegasus. The only thing to complain about is the ending. This book absolutely MUST have a Book 2. Spoilers the heroine learns to fly on her pegasus in secret but this key bit of plot information is never used to further the story. Also, the heroine fails to develop a plan to investigate the local magicians in some way. I can only assume McKinley planned a Book 2 and it has yet to be published.
The story of the tragically stunted relationship between the human and the pegasi inhabitants of this beautifully-realized world held me throughout. I am struck by the yearning each race has for the strengths and beauties of the other, and believed in the hope and promise of the growing intimacy and trust between the princess Sylvi and her bound Excellent Friend, the beautiful and endearing pegasus Ebon. I would probably award 5 stars were it not for the ending--or, as other reviewers have pointed out, the lack thereof. Readers are given no clue that this is not a standalone novel, and for me its abrupt ending was an unhappy shock. I usually don't read reviews of books by authors I already value, wanting to avoid spoilers. In this case, however, I wish that I had. I would add my advice to that of others wait until the sequel is available, it is much too frustrating to now know that I must wait 2 years to pick up this story! That said, if you are one of those readers accustomed to, and OK with, the wait between 2 (or 3, or 6, or...) books in an ongoing saga, you might do well to read this one.
This book started out with some great potential. I enjoy reading Robin McKinley's books, although her writing style does get confusing to understand at times (this book included). I loved the world that McKinley created, it was such great fun to try to visualize the pegasi and their world as she described them. The story was a fantastic idea and I will still be reading the next in the series. That being said, I have some complaints

***SPOILERS***
1. I got lost in translation quite a few times. It took me longer to read this book than normal because I just wasn't that into it. (It's difficult to get into a book that has you mentally trying to keep up).
2. It took quite a while for anything to actually happen. And then once it did, you almost wanted it to slow down again because the characters seemed to be following along much better than you (the reader) were.
3. The ending of the book was so completely random. After 4 years of searching the libraries for any indication of real friendship between the two species, Fthoom (the nemesis in the story) comes in with a story at the end of the book which essentially states that the two best friends need to separate for the good of the country! When the only thing that I could think during the telling of said story was that the reason that they could talk in the first place was BECAUSE of the rocs and naradours, etc coming in to war with the humans and pegasi. And yet the characters in the book took it to mean that the rocs and naradours, etc were attacking them because they could talk to eachother. I just did not agree with the conclusions that a few of the characters came up with.
4. When Sylvi went to the Pegasi caves, it was as though she had changed history, and yet she never even TRIED to talk to her father about what had transpired. Or the fact that she witnessed some real visions that seem to mean that the human magicians were the ones that were causing all of their issues.

Overall, I enjoyed reading the book for what it is. Although I will not be reading it a second time. The next in the series will hopefully work out a little better for my taste.
This book was well written and readily drew me into its world. As usual Robin creates wonderful individual characters with a lot of depth. She tells her story in a way that makes it totally believable. Her characters are normal everyday people with the foibles, faults and strengths we all have regardless of the occasional magical or unique ability with which they are saddled or unusual situation in which they find themselves. They go through their lives without knowing what to do any more than the rest of us do and have as many self doubts along the way. Yet they manage, often, to still accomplish extraordinary things. This is the true success of Robin Mckinley's work and what makes it so engaging. I have yet to read one of her books that it was not a finely cut jewel crafted with care and affection.

That said, I dropped one star for the cliff hanger ending that has not been remedied yet after several years. I understand that Robin Mckinley has her own way of writing and it is not fluid or easy. I understand that she plans to continue the story in subsequent books (which I avidly await) but I feel the ending does detract from the (un)finished story which otherwise is beautifully written and told.
Missing an ending. It just stops in the middle of a conflict and I can find no sequel listed anywhere.
