Falling Blind The Sentinel Wars Shannon K Butcher Books
Shannon K. Butcher has quietly snuck this amazing series in. With all the hoo haa going on with PNR these days this Urban Fantasy Series, The Sentinels has had a quiet run. And yet, I have no idea why because this series totally ROCKS..They are the Sentinels. Three races descended from ancient guardians of mankind, each possessing unique abilities in their battle to protect humanity against their eternal foes: the Synestryn.
Falling Blind is Ms Butcher's 7th book in her Sentinel War series and it makes a powerful statement.
Rory Rainey sees things.. sadly it's not things that she wants to see. She is blessed/cursed to see what those around her are seeing. Something as simple as a person nearby watching his hands as he opens a can of soup. Some visions are simple and some are intense and grotesque either way she has no way of turning them off. She is on a mission to find the one person who can help her turn them off.
Cain has spent centuries protecting their leaders' daughter, Sybl. When they were killed and Sybl was taken Cain began to loose confident in himself. Added to that was the fact that the one woman who could choose from multiple men chose his friend leaves him to believe he is no longer a man of worth. When he comes across Rory roaming the back alleys, fighting demons, he feels the pull but forces himself to refuse to believe. Living with no hope and honor is safer than believing for a moment then falling from the heights of hope. Even still, he commits to Rory. He will protect her, provide for her and help her harness her powers but not pressure her to commit to him. Yeah, right..
Together they journey to destroy the Synestryn who has taken Rory's blood and is out to control her. When it is discovered that one of their own has betrayed them Cain and Rory put their own needs on the back burner in order to bring in the traitor and save an innocent child. Only to find that their path leads in the same direction.
What was interesting in this particular book was the shades of grey that traveled throughout. A character that should only be good was corrupted and a demon, a creature of evil, loves so deeply he is willing to sacrifice all for those he loves.. Hmmmm starting to make things interesting..
One of the things Ms Butcher does so well is include characters from past stories to keep the continuity with in the story but she doesn't overwhelm us with characters, even when we want to see them. She also introduces new characters that tweak at us.. make us want to know what is going to happen next.. An excellent storyteller who writes a wonderful rich world with flawed characters who try to be the people they are supposed to be.
If you haven't checked out this series, I seriously suggest that you do.
Thanks

Falling Blind The Sentinel Wars Shannon K Butcher Books Reviews
This is number 9 of the series and it was very very good! I have enjoyed all of these stories and this was no exception. I can't wait to read the next book.😁 😸 📕📑
I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in the series. This one's story line was a little bit fast paced, and so it seemed to lose some details in the relationship between characters. Absolutely worth the read though, and still has a unique quirk
I'm getting so tired of paranormal romance writers creating TSTL female characters. Really?!? Plus, I don't understand all the female readers who thinks it's no big deal. It is to me. Rory, the lead female, is obnoxious, selfish, and whiny. I read this book until (according to my ) I was at 67%. I gave "Falling Blind" to over half the book to make Rory a more appealing character and it didn't happen. That's where I officially baled out and figured this literary Titanic had long past hit the iceberg.
Okay, I really love this world- the men are hot, the women generally tend to be not bad. But, I pretty much despised Rory's character throughout the book. As at least one other mentioned, she was whiny. I just wanted to strangle her fictional neck. Cain deserved much better- someone who wasn't going to whine for 85% of the story.
Cain was your typical awesome Sentinel- strong, masculine, sexy as hell, and with a heart the size of the US.
Rory was your typical un-awesome character whom you wished would have been better from pretty much the beginning.
Would I recommend this book to others? Sure would..specially if you like this world the author's created.
Can you read this as a standalone? Possibly. You might not know some of the background, but you do learn a bit in this. I don't think the world will be as rich for you if you don't read the previous books though.
*sigh* I'm not sure whose story I want next- Joseph and Rika? Ronan? The possibilities for me are pretty endless!
This is the 9th installment in the Sentinel War series if you count the two e-novelettes. I recommend you do NOT read them out of order. The first one is "Burning Alive" . The author has an AWESOME web site that not only details the novels, but provides a free first chapter to whet your appetite! Google it!
SYNOPSIS
This one is about a heroine Rory, who has visions and can `see' what others around her see. Problem is, there are so many visions - sometimes thousands, that they block her own vision, and she falls blind. Also, she doesn't know she's a Theronai. A human with a blood line from another plane. She's meant to be paired with a male Theronai and become a formidable magical monster slaying duo.
The male hero, Cain is one of the centuries old Theronai warriors. Most of the female Theronai were killed centuries ago, and the men literally `burst' with pain from the magic they unconsciously draw. They are designed to pair with a female as lovers and fighters, and humans won't do. So, Cain has given up on any possibility that the newly found Theronai girl Rory, even though she is compatible with him, will become his true partner.
A lot of the novel is Rory learning about her heritage, and the push and pull that a new relationship suffers when the couple tentatively stick their proverbial toes into the romance pool to test it out.
In My Opinion....
I love love love the Sentinel series. I've read them all (out of order which I do NOT recommend). You will cry and shiver with how smart and resourceful the heroines are and how much honor the men have practically dripping out their pores.
I also love the way the author interweaves other stories into the plot, so you get a glimpse of future romances and yearn to read their stories. I really hope she does Joseph's story next. But, then again, when they do the leader's story, it's usually the swan song of a series soooooo....... maybe I can hold off on him to get more books out of this author!
